Sustainability

ARTS USM GOALS TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

"Fostering Creativity, Cultivating Sustainability: Building a Brighter Tomorrow with Arts USM."

Dean's Foreword

Welcome to our vision for sustainability within the School of The Arts, USM. In today's world, the imperative for sustainable practices is more pressing than ever. As educators, scholars, and artists, we have a unique responsibility to lead by example and to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our work.

This site outlines our goals, strategies, and commitments to fostering sustainability within our school. It is a testament to our dedication to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic resilience.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative research, and community engagement, we aim to embed sustainability into our curriculum, creative endeavors, and operational practices. By empowering our students and faculty to think critically about the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic systems, we prepare them to be conscientious leaders and change agents in a rapidly evolving world.

We recognize that achieving sustainability requires collective effort and ongoing dialogue. Therefore, we invite all members of our school community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners—to join us on this journey towards a more sustainable future.

Together, let us embrace the challenge and opportunity of building a resilient and regenerative society, where the arts not only inspire, but also catalyze positive change.

  • Mural Painting at Masjid Jamek Sg Gelugor, Pulau Pinang

    31 August 2021

Mural Painting at Masjid Jamek Sg Gelugor, Pulau Pinang in collaboration with Vice Chancellor Office and School of The Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia
Utilizing an outdoor project-based learning approach, students from the VHD101 Basic 2-Dimensional Studio course engaged in practical learning by creating a mural at Masjid Jamek Sg Gelugor, Penang. This mural stands as a testament to their learning journey, demonstrating their understanding of the foundational elements and principles of art covered during the first semester of 2023/24.
The inspiration for the mural was drawn from nature, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of all life forms. The depicted leaves and flowers represent the vibrant beauty that emerges in a rich spectrum of colours, mirroring the diverse tapestry of individuals and cultures that come together in unity. Thoughtful colour selection and a harmonious design layout enhance the mural's visual impact.
Through this community project, students gained valuable firsthand experience in fostering meaningful connections between the university and the local community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated fine arts lecturers, Dr. Siti Rohaya, Dr. Shahrul Anuar, Mr. Shahidan, and Dr. Uzair, whose unwavering efforts contributed to the success of this project
